NPR’s Scott Simon has some universal advice for telling a story, whether it’s a news story or a marketing story:
- Have a point
- Beginnings need to capture attention
- Speak conversationally
- Tell it in short breathable sections to make it easy for audience to follow
- Have fun: the storyteller’s fun and spirit will keep an audience coming back

Reminds me of a great quote from Steve Martin in Planes, Trains & Automobiles:
You know when you’re telling these little stories? Here’s a good idea: have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!
